CONFIDENCE?

November 21, 2016

I have been fortunate to see and learn a lot of great things during my professional journey. However, too often and surprisingly, I have encountered a deficit of confidence in leaders which I have worked with.

The reality is, it is nearly impossible to become successful when we trap ourselves in this bubble of believing we are not enough, we don't know enough or we simply could never meet the goals we dream of.  How and why we come to this false belief is difficult to understand, but what I can say with certainty is that we can overcome these doubts.

Of course there have been times that I am hesitant in my abilities, knowledge or worth.  All leaders have those moments.  Leaders are not always going to be the smartest person in the room and the truth is, they shouldn't be.

Yes, it can be disheartening not knowing the answers that we wish we knew or believe we ought to know.  I think that those moments allow us to stay humble, on our toes, and always driven to surround ourselves with individuals who are strong, capable and driven.

In order to become "Good to Great" like Jim Collins talks about, is not a difference in strategy, financial incentive or ability... it is simply a difference in the idea that we will push forward even when all other indicators seem to say otherwise.

That being said, failure is a part of the process.  The difference between leaders who make it and those who don't, is that the leaders who do are willing to recognize their set back for what it is and still have the confidence to lead their team forward.  That is what true confidence is about.  Knowing that at times we are not always going to get it right, but accepting this and still having the drive to push forward.

So I encourage you... go get to work.  Stop telling yourself those false realities.  All great people got started not knowing the answer.  The only difference between them and you, is they got to their goal already and you are just getting started.
